Portage Beauty School Donates Funds to Local Shelter
July 15,2010
The Portage Empire Education Group beauty school presented their local domestic abuse shelter, YWCA of Kalamazoo, a check in the amount of $3,204.42. The shelter was surprised at the donation and very appreciative of the students hard work and dedication in raising such a large sum during the school's one day of beauty services event, National Day of Beauty. The shelter representative explained how the donation would be used at the shelter for the women and children. Many students commented on how good it felt to give back to the community.
The hair school also had a movie and masquerade theme to help celebrate the 100 Days of Empire at their school. There were two competitions the day of the event; a mannequin competition, where students decorated a mask with a hairstyle, and a live model competition. Students portrayed hair, makeup and costume on the model to mimic the movie theme they chose. The group that won portrayed the movie Edward Scissor Hands. Students and all guests were able to vote for the winners of the competitions.
The school was decorated with all types of decorations and a local movie theater even donated large movie posters and other items to help decorate the school. The school also had all the movie essentials--popcorn, slushies and nachos. Some of the movie posters and a few give baskets with movie related items were raffled off every hours to guests. The baskets were filled with movie items such as candy and gift cards good for the movie theater.
