Grand Rapids Hair School Hosts Open House Event!
June 29, 2010
The Grand Rapids school celebrated their 100 Days of Empire Open House event with a “Be a Star” theme. The theme was based off of well known movies and the school was decorated to represent the theme and movies as well. Each classroom was decorated according to the movie chosen with music, decorations and more. Some the classroom movies themes were Grease, Hair Spray, Alice in Wonderland, and Austin Powers. The classrooms were judged and the winning room received $100 towards a catered lunch. There were two large events going on at the school to follow the movie theme.
The first, a large show complete with students acting out a scene from their given movie. The event was judged on creativity, accuracy to the movie, and presentation. Students prepared for the event by having hair, make-
up, dress, and props including stage decorations, music, and special effects as they performed in front of a large audience consisting of fellow students, guests, and staff. The second was a mannequin relay, which consisted of each classroom having four mannequins spaced a part in the room with a separate picture per mannequin of a character from their chosen movie beside it. Students had a
timed event starting with the first student in line having a short few minutes to spend on their first mannequin to start the creation of the picture, as their time was done on the first mannequin they had to move to the next starting the creation of the new picture. The second student in line took over behind the first and continued on with the creation of the picture, then following to the second mannequin to pick up on the creation. This process continued until all the students had their time on each mannequin until all four mannequins had been worked on by all classroom students. The outcome of the day’s events were phenomenal and the students enthusiasm shined.
The local Fire Department was present with a large fire truck for children and adults to go through, a product
specialist from Goldwell was present for product knowledge and event judging, alumni of the beauty school stayed through the entire event.
There were also a few guest speakers at the event, Kelsey Dufendach, Miss Michigan for 2007-2008, representatives from local salons, a henna tattoo presentation, and a Goldwell product presentation.
The school also presented their donation of $1,984.18 to Safe Haven Ministries. The shelter was very appreciative of the donation as well as the students hard work to raise the money.
